Our favorite restaurant - La Carretería
Made it back to Buenos Aires from Uruguay just in time to celebrate Grandma’s last night before returning to California. We felt obligated to take her to our favorite restaurant, a small hole in the wall that we had found because it was right around the corner from the mansion.
It is salteña - or in the style of Salta, a province right on the border of Bolivia to the north of Argentina. The last two times we have gotten the picada plates, which although a plate of appetizers ends up being more than enough for two with: two empanadas, a fried ball of quinoa, corn, cheese, olives, tamales, eggplant salad. It also has the BEST flan I have EVER had in my life (no joke!!). It is easy to increase the portion size.
We also finally tried Zapallos en almíbar - which was something else on my good friend, Mariano’s list of food I had to try in Argentina. I think it was pumpkins, cooked in honey, or some delectably sweet juice (ie: all sugar). It was a little bit too much to tell you the truth, but we have been told it is very good with cream, to cut the sweetness. I want to try it with vanilla ice cream.
Hopefully lonely planet never finds this gem!
